News from The Pensions Archive
Alan Herbert, Chairman, The Pensions Archive Trust.

The Pensions Archive continues to receive donations of materials as
it builds its collection of papers recording the history and develop-ment of occupational and personal pensions.

Discussions are taking place with The Society of Pension Consultants, which was established in 1958, for the transfer of its archives. The Society has played an important role in the development of occupational pensions and its papers and past records will provide a valuable addition to the collections already held by the Pensions Archive.  Discussions are also taking place with Lloyds of London Super-annuation Fund which celebrates its 80th Anniversary next year for the transfer of archived material.

OPDU will be donating a complete set of its regular reports which have been issued since its formation in 1997. UBS Asset Management is also donating a complete set of their Pension Fund Indicators going back to 1973. Both of these organisations also provide the Trust with invaluable financial support.

Michael Pomery has succeeded the late Alastair Ross Goobey as The Pension Archive Trust’s President.  Tom Ross, Chris Lewin and Eddie Thomas have accepted invitations to become Vice-Presidents. We are very grateful to all of them for their interest and support.

Maurice Oldfield has retired as a director of the Trust and from the Advisory Committee. We much appreciate the support he gave to the project during its formative stages. We welcome Daniel Bescoby of Capita Hartshead to the Advisory Committee.

We also welcome Susan Gentles on taking up her position as Archivist to The Pensions Archive Trust on a full time basis from 1 September 2008. Susan recently completed her MA in Archives and Records Management at University College London. This involved her in training for the many different areas of archive work, including acquisitioning collections, international cataloguing standards and preservation techniques for a variety of materials. She commenced on a part-time basis at the end of June whilst writing her dissertation on the subject of evaluation in archival digitisation projects, which she hopes to put to good use when working on future projects for the Pensions Archive.

Before coming to London, she volunteered as an archive assistant at the University of St Andrews Special Collections and worked for a year as a graduate trainee for Glasgow University Archive Services, where she was involved in working with the Scottish Business Archive.

If readers or their organisations have papers related to the development of occupational and personal pensions which they would be prepared to donate or loan to the Pensions Archive do please make contact.
