What is the ‘Raising the Standard
of Trustee Education’ campaign?
Emma Watkins
The Raising Standards of Trustee Education (RSTE) campaign aims to improve
the quality of education, training and learning for all
UK pension trustees.
It consists of volunteers from across the pensions industry who are providing their time and expertise in order to help the campaign source and compile information and guidelines appropriate to trustees of all UK pension schemes - large or small, defined benefit, defined contribution (DC) or hybrid - and make it publicly available via our website, free of charge. None of the guidelines are mandatory, but come with the approval of the senior individuals and organisations involved in the campaign, and of the key industry institutions which support it.
Whilst the campaign is focusing on the needs of trustees, it is hoped much of the guidance that we produce will be applicable to governance committees for contract based DC schemes and for the public sector.
Currently the campaign is working on three distinct projects with working groups comprising a number of individuals from across the industry who have volunteered to donate their valuable time and energy to this worthy cause:
1.Communications Working Group
The Communications Working Group is looking to develop effective communication practices between trustees and pension industry professionals.
2.Trustee Training Working Group
The Trustee Training Working Group aims to set guidelines about what trustees should expect from training and everybody who delivers training with the goal of informing trustees and their trainers about that makes trustee training effective.
3.Trustee Support Working Group
The Trustee Support Working Group will work with supporting industry organisations to create a freely available set of documents and tools to support trustees in their role.
2008 has been a promising year - we have launched our website which contains information on our next steps and we have teamed up with the Raising Standards of Pensions Administration (RSPA) campaign to become a unified body. RSPA promotes the advancement of knowledge and best practice in pensions administration and whilst both organisations will continue to pursue their own aims and objectives, we will work more closely together to promote the common ambition to raise the standards of workplace pensions
What can you do?
Volunteers…
None of this work can be achieved without the ongoing support of current and future volunteers who look to perform one or more of the following roles:
Focus Group Member - A likely end user of the material to be produced by the RSTE campaign, this individual will form part of a group tasked with providing
objective opinion by reviewing the work of the Working Groups before final approval.
Supporter - An expert in their field, who whilst not able to sign up to a regular commitment of time, is keen to input into specific projects of interest in conjunction with a particular working group for which their input and advice would be valuable.
Working Group Member - An expert in their field who can commit 15-20 hours per year in producing and providing material for use by trustees to improve their knowledge and understanding.
Ideas…
We are looking for ideas on what trustees would like to see on this website. If you have any suggestions on what you would find useful or any recent situations where you struggled to find information on a particular subject, please let us know so that we can ensure that this tool is fit for purpose.
Log on to our website…
We would welcome you logging
on to the RSTE website, www.RSTE.co.uk, and saving it as a favourite. Whilst the information currently on there is focused on providing information about the groups currently undertaking the work, as we enter 2009 the products of our labour will be posted for your information.
If you are interested in assisting this valuable campaign by performing any of the roles detailed above or providing any suggestions, please contact Emma Watkins or
Bob Campion via the website contact details.
